Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a stepping stone between preschool and kindergarten. The optional program includes appropriate curriculum opportunities for language development, foundations of mathematics, and social-emotional development through dramatic play, small group instruction, and intentional teaching through hands-on activities to achieve readiness for traditional kindergarten.
Assembly Bill 130, signed by Governor Newsom in July 2021, expands TK programs to make it available to all 4-year-olds by 2025-2026. The new program will be gradually phased in expanding the existing TK classrooms until it covers all 4-year-olds in the state.
For the 2022-2023 school year, Sacramento City Unified will offer both full and half day programs at 19 locations through the district. To qualify for 2022-2023 TK enrollment, students must be 5 between September 2, 2022 and February 2, 2023.
