Transitional Kindergarten
Transitional Kindergarten
Sacramento City Unified has expanded its transitional kindergarten to 33 locations for the 2023-2024 school year.
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a stepping stone between preschool and kindergarten. The optional program provides students with an additional year of preparation, so they enter kindergarten with stronger academic, social, and emotional skills needed for future success in school.
Assembly Bill 130, signed by Governor Newsom in July 2021, expands TK programs to make it available to all 4-year-olds by 2025-2026. The new program will be gradually phased in expanding the existing TK classrooms until it covers all 4-year-olds in the state.
Half-Day Transitional Kindergarten Programs
The Half Day Transitional Kindergarten programs have a developmental and age appropriate curriculum that gives early learners time to acquire school readiness, academic, social, and emotional skills needed for kindergarten and beyond. The curriculum model is based upon the California Early Learning Foundations, blending play based learning opportunities in the program and introducing State Common Core Standards in preparation for the following years in school. The program is 3 hours and 20 minutes long each day. The class sizes are 24 students plus a teacher and instructional aide.

Register for Transitional Kindergarten
for the 2023-2024 School Year
To qualify to register for TK, students must be 5 years of age September 2, 2023, through April 2, 2024.
To register your student for TK, please come into the Enrollment Center or contact the Early Learning and Care Department at (916) 643-7807.
Families will need to provide photo identification, address verification, proof of birth documentation, and immunization records. Once student’s information have been verified, an Early Learning and Care staff member will contact you regarding placement at a school site. No qualifying student will be denied a spot into Transitional Kindergarten. Enrollment at the school of residence is not guaranteed.
School Choice
Enter your address into School Finder at http://www.scusd.edu/school-finder, to find your neighborhood school and/or the closest TK program.
Families can choose to apply to any TK location, but priority for school selection is the following:
- Students who reside within the selected school boundaries* and/or their school choice is the closest TK location to their primary residence.
- Siblings of students already in attendance at the selected school and will continue to be enrolled in the upcoming school year.
- Students whose parent/guardian’s primary place of employment is the selected school.
*A.M. Winn, Alice Birney and Leonardo da Vinci schools are schools of choice and do not have neighborhood boundaries. Applicants to these programs will not receive priority based on location.
Visit a School
Attend visitation events or call schools directly to schedule a tour of the location(s) your family is interested in.
Schools with Additional Requirements
A.M. Winn, Alice Birney and Leonardo da Vinci schools require an adult representative (parent/guardian) to attend a school visitation and complete a student interest form in order to qualify. Please contact the schools directly for more information.
Immunization Requirements
California schools are required to check immunization records for all new student admissions at TK/Kindergarten through 12th grade. Parent/guardians must show their child’s Immunization Record as proof of immunization. Families will be required to upload their student’s Immunization Record as part of the registration process.
Parents’ Guide to Immunizations | Spanish
SCUSD is also offering free Immunization Clinics to eligible students. See Immunization Clinic schedule.
Before and After School Care
Families who are interested in having their TK student in Sac City Unified’s Expanded Learning program will have a guaranteed slot in the program. This program is grant funded and there is no cost to families.
Youth Development Support Services will provide Expanded Learning until 6:00 p.m. at all TK sites; however students can be picked up earlier based on parent/guardian needs.
