What does SEL look like schoolwide and in classrooms?

Systemic school wide implementation of social emotional learning (SEL) includes the following:

  • A strong foundation for professional learning (includes collaborative structures for shared visioning, continuous improvement process, and adult development of SEL)
  • SEL-infused practices and pedagogy (Equity-focused, relationship-centered, culturally responsive practices)
  • SEL-embedded Academic content and assessments (Common Core State Standards, Academic Discourse)
  • SEL-integrated in climate/culture (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports, Restorative Practices, parent engagement, etc.)

A classroom that implements social emotional learning looks includes the following:

  • A supportive, equity-based, positive classroom climate
  • Integration of SEL into academic instructional practices
  • Explicit instruction of SEL skills
