SCUSD Board of Education Recap
September 21, 2023
At the September 21 Sacramento City Unified School Board meeting, the Board approved the appointment of Krystal Thomas as Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and the appointment of Matthew Kempen as Principal of Theodore Judah Elementary School. Student Board Member Liliana “Gracie” Miller Segura was sworn in by Board Member Christina Pritchett, and Board Member Jasjit Singh presented a Stellar Teacher award to Jason Dauenhauer, a teacher at Hiram Johnson High School.
The Board took action to approve three Resolutions:
- To support the development of an Inclusive Community School
Model. Community schools are an evidence-based strategy for
school improvement and community development.
- To proclaim the month of September 2023 is Suicide Prevention
and Recovery Month, and encourage all members of our school
community to promote mental health and suicide prevention.
- To recognize September 15 through October 15, 2023, as National Hispanic Heritage Month, and celebrate the contributions of local Hispanic leaders, District staff, students, and their families.
The Board heard presentations from three superintendent search firms that are being considered by the District to provide support during the recruitment and hiring process for the District’s next superintendent. The Board plans to make a final decision on which search firm to engage at a future Board meeting.
The Board also voted to approve the District’s year end fiscal report, which was certified as positive. As a result of this action, the Sacramento County Office of Education is longer required to hold fiscal oversight over SCUSD.
