Camellia Basic School is an academic prep school that develops excellence through an emphasis on the skills for English language arts and math. Students also develop lifelong skills by participating in art, music, physical education and the sciences as well as development as citizens, using a school-wide class meeting model to develop productive problem solving strategies. Camellia students exceed district and state averages on state and national achievement tests. Camellia graduates continue to be
outstanding students and student body leaders in middle school and high school.

Camellia Basic Teacher Wins Literacy Award

Dawn Student, a Camellia Basic Elementary School first-grade teacher, has been awarded the Barbara Schmidt Lighthouse for Literacy Award by the Sacramento Area Reading Association (SARA). Ms. Student (pictured above) was selected for her leadership and commitment to literacy work with the Common Core Standards. Ms. Student will be honored by SARA at a celebration on May 17. Congratulations!

Camellia Kids Help Keep Pools Open

Camellia Basic Elementary School families and staff raised $665.69 in a penny drive to keep six City of Sacramento pools open this summer. The drive supported SaveMart’s efforts in which the company offered to match up to $500,000 in donations.

Hero of the Week

Kathy Nagarajan keeps giving back to Camellia Elementary School! After retiring from teaching first grade for more than 35 years, Mrs. Nagarajan continues to support the programs she helped put in place. She frequently returns to Camellia to teach all the first graders about the Sacramento Camellia Festival that celebrates the flower for which the school is named. In support of the kindergarten work, she creates and prepares new reading and support materials and often provides one-to-one and small group instruction for students. To recognize and encourage the children for reaching their reading and math goals, she brings prizes to the classroom. Says Principal Kathy Kingsbury: “Mrs. Nagarajan is a priceless resource.” Congratulations to our eConnection “Hero of the Week”!

Camellia Basic Honors ‘Champions’

Camellia Basic Elementary School has created a “Champions” bulletin board in the cafeteria to honor students who score highly on the FitnessGram’s pacer laps. The students’ photos and names are proudly displayed as the school works to promote the idea that fitness is important.

Camellia Honors Colorful Traditions

Camellia Basic celebrated the Lunar New Year – the Year of the Dragon – with its annual parade. The parade was led by Lion Dancers, followed by the Lunar New Year Queen and all of the students, each carrying a puppet, wearing a special hat, waving a wind toy, using noise makers or wearing traditional dress. All while wishing a year of happiness and good fortune to everyone!

Camellia Families Enjoy Health Night

SCUSD’s Adult Education Department brought a Family Health Night to Camellia Basic School on January 19. Parents and their children enjoyed a variety of activities together, learning more about the human body, how it works and how to live healthier lives. Parents also had an opportunity to have blood sugar and blood pressure checked by health aide students from the Charles A. Jones Career and Education Center.

Camellia School Embraces New Traditions

The Camellia Basic School community is embracing new traditions, including a new gallery style art show and “Gardening Day.” On December 15, each student displayed art work for enjoyment by families and other guests. In addition to the “gallery,” visitors were invited to create their own art, and many made colorful bookmarks, geometric collages, “squiggle” drawings and hats. New York Life also provided parents with an opportunity to fingerprint their children and receive individual identification materials.

City Councilman McCarty, SCUSD to Open New Community Garden
Ribbon-cutting on Saturday to be followed by Camellia Basic School Harvest Festival with the Kings, Fire Department

SCUSD and Sacramento City Councilman Kevin McCarty will officially open a new community garden next to Camellia Basic School on Saturday (October 29).

Camellia Park Community Garden, located in the park adjacent to Camellia Basic, will be available for use by the school and neighbors. City Councilman McCarty and SCUSD Board of Education President Gustavo Arroyo will cut the ribbon at the new garden at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
