The Last 2022-2023 Sac City Scroll of the Year!

Sac City Scroll Newsletter
Sac City Scroll

Dear Sac City Unified Families,

The last day of school is almost here! Your school will communicate any planned shortened days as we lead up to the last day of the 2022-2023 school year, which is Thursday, June 15.

Many families have asked for an update regarding the 2023-2024 student attendance calendar. The Board of Education will review the proposed student attendance calendar at the meeting on Thursday, June 8. As soon as it is finalized, we will send you a communication with the approved student attendance calendar for the 2023-2024 school year. In the recent past, SCUSD has started school on the Thursday before Labor Day.

June is Pride Month, honoring our LGBTQ+ community, and Juneteenth is Monday, June 19, observing the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. We hope our families have an opportunity to participate in the many special events that are being hosted this month in recognition of those events.

RT RydeFree for Summer

As students head into summer break, the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) wants to remind everyone that students/youth in transitional kindergarten through 12th grade can ride the entire SacRT transit network, including SacRT buses, light rail, and SmaRT Ride on-demand microtransit service for FREE!

HOW TO RIDE:

All schools will be provided with new RydeFreeRT cards (valid June 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024) for students in grades TK-12th.

Youth who are experiencing homelessness or taking part in foster programs are also eligible.

For students and youth who need a RydeFreeRT card, visit SacRT’s Customer Service and Sales Center located at 1225 R Street (adjacent to the 13th Street light rail station). RydeFreeRT cards are also available at most Sacramento County public libraries.

Summer Meals

SCUSD’s Nutrition Services Department is offering free breakfast and lunch at various SCUSD school locations and community sites throughout the summer. The summer meal program is available starting Monday, June 28 and runs through Friday, July 28, 2023. Some sites will continue to offer meals into August. All children 18 years-old and under can receive free meals, no paperwork necessary and enrollment is not required. Click here to see more information about summer meals.

Breakfast is served from 7:45 a.m. until 8:15 a.m. and lunch is served from 11:35 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. These meal times are likely to change, families are urged to check with the school site front office, or visit https://thecentralkitchen.org/summer/ for the most updated information.

Groundbreaking Events at Kemble/Chavez and Nicholas

The District continues to make amazing progress on updating and modernizing our facilities with a focus on historically underserved areas. On Monday, June 5th, we broke ground at Edward Kemble and Cesar Chavez where the construction of a new campus is scheduled to begin this summer. Read more about it here.

This Friday, we’re breaking ground at 10 am Nicholas Elementary. These rebuild projects were specifically chosen for improvements based on high segregation, poverty indicators, and other factors identified by Sac City Unified’s award-winning Facilities Master Plan Equity Index which can be reviewed at scusdplan.org.

Water Safety

This year is different! Local rivers are especially dangerous, running higher, faster, and colder due to the snow melt runoff from an active winter.

Snow melt will keep area waterways running very fast and dangerously cold. Even strong swimmers will be in danger. Do not enter cold, fast-running water & keep in mind these safety tips!

  • Never go on the water alone
  • Wear a life jacket
  • Keep a close eye on children
