Title I Part A School-Level Parent and Family Engagement Policy and Parent-School Compact
For Title I Funded Schools:
Parent engagement policies and Parent-School Compacts continue to be requirements under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act or Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The new law requires that Title I funded schools make a few changes to the School Level Parent Engagement Policy. The California Department of Education has recently released templates that include all of the new language and requirements, and welcome schools to use them as they annually revise their parent policies and school compacts.
Use of the new templates is optional but schools must ensure that all the major components in the templates are present in their current policy and compact, including changes in the titles, Title I, Part A School-Level Parent and Family Engagement Policy and School – Parent Compact.
The Title I, Part A Parent and Family Engagement Policy and School – Parent Compact must be reviewed and revised if needed yearly with input from a parent advisory group such as the School Site Council and should be noted in the minutes of the meeting.
The attached CDE templates were created to provide for easy customization. Only the school identification and bullet/example sections need to be completed and parents do not need to sign either document.
The Title I, Part A Parent and Family Engagement Policy and School – Parent Compact must be sent to parents once a year (hard copy). Some examples of how these policies can be shared are:
- Inclusion in a printed and distributed Parent-Student Handbook
- Printed and sent home by “backpack method” proceeded by an auto-call announcement
- Printed and mailed home
