National Geographic is proud to partner with the Breakthrough Junior Challenge – a global initiative to develop and demonstrate young people’s knowledge of science and scientific principles, generate excitement in science and math, support STEM career choices and engage the imagination and interest of the public-at-large in key concepts of fundamental science.

To take part in the Challenge, students ages 13 to 18 submit a video, no more than 3 minutes in length, on a theory or concept in math, physics or the life sciences. The prizes are spectacular. One winner is recognized and awarded a $250,000 college scholarship. The teacher who inspired the winning student receives a $50,000 teacher prize and the winner’s school also receives a $100,000 state-of-the art science lab.

Following are key dates for the Challenge:

  • Application submission begins Friday, September 1, 2017
  • Deadline for submissions is Sunday, October 1, 2017
  • Online Popular Vote, October 23–November 2, 2017
