Sac City Unified to Hold Virtual Graduation Ceremonies to Honor Graduating Class of 2020

Press release

SACRAMENTO, CA – Sacramento City Unified School District will honor students from the Class of 2020 by holding virtual graduation ceremonies for each Sac City Unified high school.

“While our students are not in our classroom, they are in our thoughts and remain close to our hearts,” said Sacramento City Unified School District Superintendent Jorge Aguilar. “The graduating class of 2020 deserves recognition for achieving this educational milestone and for making this transition at a seminal moment in our history. We look forward to celebrating this special day with our graduates and our communities, in a safe virtual space. We’re going to make the best of this moment together.”

“Our Class of 2020 must be recognized for their hard work, dedication and achievements,” said Sacramento City Unified Board President Jessie Ryan. “As we are all experiencing the difficulty of this health crisis together, I cannot begin to imagine how exceptionally hard this must be for our graduating class and the families who have supported them every step of the way. This wasn’t what any of us expected, but we must come together as a community to make this important milestone special for our students.”

The district will partner with the school memorabilia company Jostens to coordinate the virtual graduation ceremonies. The district is in the early planning stage for the graduation events, which will be personalized for each Sac City Unified school with graduating high school seniors.

The ceremony could include speakers, music, presentation of the class, diplomas, and movement of the tassel. Each high school will communicate with their students and families to share details on the virtual ceremony, cap and gown pick-ups, and distribution of diplomas.
