Sac City Schools Closed on February 14 in Observance of Lincoln’s Birthday

Press release

All schools in Sacramento City Unified School District will be closed for students on Monday, February 14, in observance of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, district officials announced.

District schools traditionally have been closed on this holiday, but, due to an error, the official SCUSD School Year Calendar shows February 14 as a regular school day. School will resume on Tuesday, February 15. Teachers and principals will be using this day for a variety of purposes, including staff development focused on critical district initiatives and administrative prep time.

To notify parents, the District is using its ConnectEd automatic phone calling system, sending letters home with students, putting up fliers around campuses and including information about the holiday on its website and in its email newsletter. Notifications have been translated into six languages. The District is also asking for media help in spreading the word.

“We want to make sure that every parent knows that this is a non-instructional day and children should not come to school,” said SCUSD Superintendent Jonathan Raymond. “We regret that this scheduling error occurred and we want the public to know that we are doing everything possible to inform parents of this shortened school week, and identify community resources to support any additional needs families may have.”
