Special Education Assessments

What are special education assessments?

Special education assessments are standardized assessments. These assessments are conducted by appropriately credentialed and/or licensed individuals. The assessments inform an Individual Education Plan (IEP) team’s decision as to whether or not a student requires special education supports and services.

Do special education assessments require parent consent?

Yes, the District must obtain consent from the student’s educational rights holder, often the parent/guardian, to begin conducting special education assessments.

What is the difference between an initial and triennial special education assessment?

Initial

An initial special education assessment is conducted to determine eligibility for special education services.

Triennial

A triennial special education assessment is conducted at least once every three years from the date a student is found eligible.

What impact did the COVID-19 pandemic have on conducting special education assessments?

Due to school closures, safety mitigation measures, and the lack of agreement on the issue between SCUSD and SCTA, special education assessments were not conducted from March, 2020 – February 26, 2021.  This caused SCUSD to be out of compliance with federal and state laws pertaining to special education assessments.

How many assessments are currently outstanding?

The District is committed to providing weekly updates regarding the number of outstanding special education assessments. The District will update the table below every Wednesday.

The data displayed below is retrieved from the District’s local data management system. It is important to understand that enrollment and parent consent will impact the number of outstanding assessments which are reported.  For example, students may enroll or disenroll with overdue assessments. Also, the number of outstanding assessments are those which the District has received consent from the educational rights holder. As the District receives parent consent for proposed assessments, it will impact the numbers reported.
