Research Model Resources
IIM (Independent Investigations Model)

In Grades 2-6 the William and Mary Units require students to engage in Inquiry Based Research.  This is different from the types of topical research that students may have engaged in as a part of previous year’s curriculum.  For example, instead of asking students to write a report on the planet Saturn, in inquiry based research, they may be asked to investigate “Why Saturn is not hospitable for human life?”  Inquiry based research asks students to think like a researcher in a specific content area (math, science, history, language arts).  To support scaffolding of this type of research, you may find the following resources to be helpful.

A word of caution: used incorrectly, the IIM tools for research can easily become topical reports of information; be sure that your students are investigating a real world question.
