At the May 15 meeting of the Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education, the Board recognized George Washington Carver students, Chloe Marsh Williams, Camron Apilado, Amara Wilson, and Aloysia M. Glenn as our Stellar Students! They were recognized by their teachers for their leadership, strong work ethic, kindness, character, and positivity. Congratulations Chloe, Camron, Amara, and Aloysia!

Out of Closed Session, the Board announced the appointment of Brooke Fahey as the Principal of Phoebe Hearst Elementary School, and Dorothy Rahman as the Principal of John Bidwell Elementary School.

During the Open Session, informational reports were received by the Board, including:

  • Recognition of May as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. SCUSD celebrates and recognizes the contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to American society. The month was formally recognized by the U.S. government in 1992. The date of May was chosen to commemorate the first Japanese immigrants arrival in the United States on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, which was largely built by Chinese laborers.

  • A presentation by the Black/African American Advisory Board (B/AAAB) to provide an annual update on their work. The purpose of the B/AAAB is to advise SCUSD regarding services, programs, policies and resources offered that directly impact the Academic and Social Emotional Learning outcomes of Black/African American students attending school in SCUSD.

  • An update from SCUSD Facilities Services on the Delta Shores Development. This update reviewed how SCUSD is monitoring the development and will continue to plan for likely increased enrollment to local school sites.

  • An Expanded Learning Opportunities Program Update presented by the SCUSD Youth Development Department.

The Board approved recommendations from the 7-11 Committee to surplus four District properties not currently used as school sites. The school sites approved for surplusing included CP Huntington Elementary, Florin Technology Adult Education Center, Fruitridge Elementary, and Maple Elementary. The Board then approved a process for Hiring a Real Estate Consultant to assist in analyzing potential uses, development, and/or sale of these surplused properties.
