Welcome back!
 
Today is the first day of school, and there is nothing more energizing than seeing our students back in classrooms, reconnecting with teachers and friends, and beginning a new year full of possibility.
 
As we start this school year, I also want to share an important update about the work underway to build a stronger and more stable Sacramento City Unified.
 
SCUSD’s financial challenges did not begin with this Board, this administration, or many of the people now being asked to solve them. They developed over many years through difficult decisions and structural problems that have affected our District for far too long.
 
We cannot change that history. But we can take responsibility for what happens next. And we are already doing that work. 
 
My commitment as Superintendent is not simply to manage these challenges from year to year. It is to help fix them once and for all and build a district that is financially stable, well run, and able to focus its resources where they belong: on our students, our classrooms, and the people who serve them.
 
Please review this press release that we issued earlier today regarding the State Superintendent’s review of our MOU with SCTA, which we believe puts us on a more sustainable path. As we update our budget outlook with the latest information, we will examine every responsible option available to us, including revisiting strategies and agreements that can produce real savings and greater long term stability.
 
On this first day of school, I want families to know that this work is well underway. There is more to do, and some of it will be difficult, but we are making progress. We are making different choices. And we are building the foundation for a stronger District - one that helps every student learn, grow and thrive.
 
I am excited about the year ahead and grateful to begin it with all of you.
