SCUSD Helps Connect Graduates To Over $68k In Scholarships!

This year Sacramento City Unified School District helped connect 22 graduates from four different high schools (Burbank, Kennedy, McClatchy and Rosemont) to over $68,000 in scholarships to support these students’ post secondary education! Below is a list of our graduates that applied for and earned scholarships that were promoted by the District this year:

  • Rigoberto Gonzalez Serrano, CKM HS ($1,300 CKM Class ‘66 Scholarship)

Participating Scholarship Funds

Antonio Medrano Memorial Scholarship:  The Antonio Medrano Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of a former Cesar Chavez Elementary School principal, Antonio Medrano, to continue his legacy and honor his dedication to support the children and families in this community with two $500 honorary awards and three $1,000 awards to deserving college bound graduates, preferably students who enrolled in a district bilingual program.

C.K. McClatchy Class of ‘66 Scholarship:  C.K. McClatchy Class of 1966 established C.K. McClatchy Class of ’66 Scholarship to support C.K. McClatchy students with a scholarship award of $1,000 to seniors who achieve 3.0 or higher GPA, demonstrate financial need, and will attend a two-year or four-year college full-time.

Carpenter’s Local Union No. 46 Scholarship:  Carpenter’s Local Union No. 46 Scholarship, established in 2001, continues a local carpenter’s union’s tradition of supporting the benefit of all working people and community at large through a scholarship award of $1,000 to a deserving college bound graduate who demonstrates financial need and community involvement.

Dell’Orto Simmons Memorial Scholarship:  Dell’Orto Simmons Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of William “Bill” Simmons, a former C.K. McClatchy High School student, Mr. Simmons and his wife, Mildred Dell’Orto, offers scholarship awards in the amount of $5,000 ($2,500/year for two years) to deserving C.K. McClatchy college or vocational school bound graduates who were not high academic achievers.

George H. Clark Memorial Scholarship:  Established in memory of George H. Clark, a former Sacramento City Manager. George Clark Memorial Scholarship offers a $20,000 ($5,000/year for four year) scholarship award to a deserving Sacramento City Unified School District comprehensive high school college bound graduate who demonstrates financial need, outstanding academic achievement, responsible citizenship, and active community involvement.

Grant Bennett Memorial Scholarship:  Grant Bennett Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of a former Sacramento City Unified School District board member, Grant Bennett, offers a scholarship of an amount to be determined each year to a deserving University of California bound graduates who demonstrate financial need.

Jan and Joe Matisco Student Athlete Scholarship:  Jan and Joe Matisco Student Athlete Scholarship, established in honor of a former Kennedy High School staff, Jan, and her husband, Joe, who dedicated many years of their time to Kennedy High School and athletes, offers a scholarship award to a deserving Kennedy High School senior who exhibits dedication to their academic and athletic endeavors.

Jewell T. O’Connell Memorial Scholarship:  Jewell O’Connell Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of Jewell T. O’Connell, who lived in Sacramento and wrote and produced plays for the United States government during the Great Depression, offers $1,000 scholarship award to deserving college bound graduates who demonstrate financial need.

John A. and Charlotte M. Church Memorial Scholarship:  John A. and Charlotte M. Church Memorial Scholarship, established in memory a former McClatchy staff, John, and Charlotte Church, offers $1,000 to C.K. McClatchy graduate who demonstrates above average academic scholarship, leadership qualities, community involvement, and financial need.

Luela M. Goff Memorial Scholarship:  Luela M. Goff Memorial Scholarship, established as a memorial to the wife of a former Sacramento High School teacher, Frances Willie Goff, awards $900/year for four years to graduates who attended SCUSD schools during their junior and senior years and whose academic achievement fulfills UC/CSU admission requirements.

Susan Cherveny Memorial Scholarship:  Susan Cherveny Memorial Scholarship was established in memory a former Will C. Wood teacher, Susan Cherveny, to recognize the creative achievements of students whose goals include higher education.

Thomas M. Eustis Memorial Scholarship:  Thomas M. Eustis Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of Thomas M. Eustis, who taught math and Fire Science Program at C. K. McClatchy High School, offers one scholarship in an amount to be determined each year to a deserving California college or university campus bound graduate, preferably from C.K. McClatchy, with science or math focus.
