Sac City Unified’s Nutrition Services staff served over 84,000 meals to our families this summer!
Every summer, Sac City Unified’s Nutrition Services Department helps serve meals at no cost to students who may lack access to healthy food in their neighborhood. We are proud to share that this past summer, 31 sites participated in the free summer meals program and a total of 84,641 meals were served.
We would like to thank our hard-working Nutrition Services staff members who were busy not only preparing these meals, but also participating in 5 summer pop-up events held at Leataata Floyd, John Still Elementary, Unity Church, Phoenix Park and George Sims Center. Additionally, staff served meals at other summer events such as Camping at Fairy Tale Town, the California State Fair, where SCUSD students participated.
Our nutrition staff also embarked in a partnership with the Center for Land-Based Learning. Through this program, the District was able to purchase local produce from a co-operative group of farmers that make up West Sacramento Urban Farms. We also purchased organic cucumbers, organic heirloom tomatoes from Glen at Six O’ Clock Farm in West Sacramento, and offered them in our summer meals program. We were also able to tour his farm, learn about his sustainable growing practices, and cultivate new partnerships, all in the spirit of better serving our students.
Thank you to all nutrition services staff for your hard work and dedication this summer! Learn more about Sac City Unified’s Nutrition Services and Menus by visiting our website.
