Sac City Kids Connect provides SCUSD Families with Six Months of Free Home Internet
Since the start of our school closures on March 13, our team has been working tirelessly to close the digital divide – including providing our students with computers and looking for new and innovative ways to connect our students to the internet.
Today, we’re announcing Sac City Kids Connect, a new program to provide eligible Sac City Unified families with free internet at home for six months.
The program – announced in partnership with the City of Sacramento and Comcast – will provide families with a unique code to sign up for free home internet through Comcast’s Internet Essentials program. We will begin distributing codes over the next few weeks.
Families must sign up by June 30, 2020 and eligibility will be confirmed by Comcast upon application. If you indicated during previous district outreach that you needed internet access, your school site should contact you to provide you with the unique code. Otherwise, you may visit www.scusd.edu/kidsconnect and fill out the webform, or call your school site for more information.
What is Comcast Internet Essentials Program?
Internet Essentials is a program for families and other low-income households who currently do not subscribe to the internet at home.
Since 2011, more than 8 million low-income Americans have been connected to the Internet at home through the Internet Essentials program, 90 percent of whom were not connected to the Internet at home until they signed up through Internet Essentials.

What is the Sac City Kids Connect program?
Sac City Unified School District and the City of Sacramento are working together to extend and fund the program for families of Sacramento City Unified students. In the next few weeks, Sac City Unified families who indicated they did not have internet access will receive a code to get six months of free internet through the Comcast Internet Essentials program. Families can also indicate their interest in receiving a unique code by filling out a form at www.scusd.edu/kidsconnect
What is the cost to families?
It is free for the first six months. If families would like to continue the service after the first six months, the cost will be $9.95 per month.
Who qualifies for the program?
Families interested in signing up for the program will be provided a code by Sac CIty Unified. However, Comcast will determine eligibility. Families may qualify if they:
- Are eligible for public assistance programs such as the National School Lunch Program, Housing Assistance, Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, and others.
- Live in an area where Comcast Internet Service is available.
- Are not an existing Xfinity Internet customer and have not subscribed to Comcast Internet within the last 90 days (Sac City Unified families who previously signed up for Internet essentials after March 16 can convert to a free Sac City Kids Connect account for a period of six months from the beginning of their current contract date.)
How do Sac City Unified families sign up?
Families must sign up by June 30, 2020. SCUSD will have special codes for families to use to sign up for the Sac City Kids Connect program. Families may use this code to sign up for Internet Essentials, which will be funded for six months through the Sac City Kids Connect program. Eligibility will be determined by Comcast as part of the application process.
What if I signed up for Internet Essentials already?
Sac City Unified families who signed up for Internet Essentials may still sign up for Sac City Kids Connect. Families should contact the district who will communicate with Comcast to convert their current Internet Essentials account to a free Sac City Kids Connect account for a period of six months from the beginning of their current contact date.
How do I get a code?
Families who previously indicated that they needed support to access the internet will be contacted by school site principals and staff to provide them with the code. Families can also request a code by completing the webform at scusd.edu/kidsconnect or contacting their school site.
