Message to SCUSD Community on Incident at Kit Carson International Academy

e-Connections Post

Dear Sac City Unified Students, Families, and Community:

Our district was recently made aware of an incident that occurred at Kit Carson International Academy where a teacher reportedly made racist and derogatory statements during their instructional time with students. We apologize to students who experienced this unacceptable and despicable commentary in their classroom, as well as the entire district and school site community. To be clear, the teacher’s statements do not reflect the values of our district, where we condemn racism in any form. Any comment by the teacher that a racial slur is now somehow “okay” is not a position that is shared by or will be tolerated by this district. The language used in the recording is inexcusable and the District will be investigating this matter further and offering supports to our students and families.

Racism, including the use of racial slurs or epithets, harms our students, families, and community. Our district has taken strong steps to address systemic racism and its impacts on our students. This incident is deeply troubling, especially because it occurred in a classroom meant to be a safe haven for our students to learn and grow.

As your Superintendent, upon learning of this incident, I have directed that an investigation be conducted. I have also directed staff to identify supports for our students who were impacted by this incident.

It is important for our students to have the opportunity to heal and express their feelings about this incident in a supportive and positive space. Our district will provide direct support to students on an individual basis. We encourage you to reach out to the district’s Student Support Services team for support for your student at (916) 643-9252. Services provided are free of charge and are confidential.

Our district takes this issue very seriously. Please know that while we cannot comment further on this incident, the district continues to look into this matter and will take appropriate action.

Thank you,

Jorge A. Aguilar

Superintendent
