Making Up Lost Instructional Time for Students

e-Connections Post

SCUSD is committed to ensuring our students receive equitable access to critical instructional days and minutes lost due to the strike. Given our budget outlook (which you can learn more about at this evening’s board meeting) and based on our recent agreements with SCTA and SEIU staff, it is also imperative that we find a solution that reduces state fines associated with these lost days and minutes. Our budget outlook, combined with these potential fines, could result in cuts to programs that directly support and serve students. SCUSD presented the Sacramento City Teachers Association (SCTA) with a proposal to extend some school days and add extra learning days to the final week of our school year.

Our proposal both assures student access to instruction and reduces state fines by:

  • Extending the school year by six (6) days to include June 17 and June 20 to 24, 2022.
  • Extending Thursday reduced schedules by 1 hour for six (6) consecutive weeks beginning April 28, 2022.
  • Requiring employees to provide instruction and services to students for the extended school days in order to recover salary forfeited during the strike.

Our labor partners have committed to provide a counter-proposal and reconvene at the bargaining table tomorrow afternoon. As we work with SCTA, district staff are determining how this proposed extension of the school year will impact our students, families, staff, activities and practices. We apologize for the uncertainty surrounding the remainder of the school year and remain committed to collaborating with you and our labor partners to find solutions that best meet the needs of our students. We will keep you informed as new information becomes available.
