In a Special Board of Education Meeting last night, the Sacramento City Unified School District took action to require vaccinations against COVID-19 for both staff and eligible students (ages 12 and over) by November 30, 2021, in compliance with Governor Newson’s announcement on October 1. The resolution adopted by the SCUSD Board can be read in its entirety on the SCUSD website. Vaccine-eligible students who do not receive their first or second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by November 30, 2021 will have the option to file a valid medical or personal belief exemption and opt into regular, routine testing to remain in an in-person learning environment. Students without vaccine documentation or exemption documentation with registration for regular, routine testing will be offered an Independent Study option*.  

“A vaccine requirement is the path forward to keeping our schools open and increasing immunity,” said Jorge A. Aguilar, Superintendent, Sacramento City Unified School District. “As superintendent of Sac City Unified, I wake up every morning feeling the anxieties caused by this unprecedented pandemic and its threat to meeting the academic, social, emotional, nutritional and other needs of our students. For so many of our students, schools are their safe haven and I thank the Board for their approval of this resolution based on our commitment to meeting those student needs. The process to submit vaccination records, or to file an exemption for medical or personal beliefs, will be centralized and available in multiple languages with more details to come soon. 

Sacramento City Unified School District is committed to providing vaccine equity and has hosted several vaccine clinics at school sites and at its central office. It continues to collaboratively work with its health and community partners to continue providing these opportunities in our neighborhoods most impacted by COVID-19.
