Board Update: Welcome Back Message From President Ryan
Dear Sac City Families,
Happy New Year! I sincerely hope that your families enjoyed the Winter Break and that your children were excited to return to school.
As President of the Board of Education, I want to share that in 2019 the Board will make some critical decisions that will impact the quality of your child’s education. I also want to invite you to attend an upcoming board meeting to participate in that decision-making.
As a working parent myself, I understand the importance of making sure that families can attend our Board Meetings and that many families rely on having safe and nurturing child care assistance. That is why the Board has worked to ensure that there is child care and healthy snacks available for children at every Board meeting. Families in need of translation services can also arrange for an interpreter by calling (916) 643-2374.
Here’s a look at some of the difficult work we will tackle in the coming months:
- Approving a balanced budget for the 2019-20 school year that prioritizes the needs of students, maintains local control and prevents the district from a state takeover.
- Reviewing and approving the district’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), which is the district’s spending plan aligned with academic priorities.
- Reviewing and approving the district’s Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), which is a document that represents a school’s efforts to improve student performance.
Your voice on these and other important issues is both welcome and essential to the Board’s decision-making process. Please note, that Board meetings take place twice a month at the Serna Center (5735 47th Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95824). Below is a list of the meeting dates for the remainder of this school year:
- January 17th @ 6 p.m.
- February 7th @ 6 p.m.
- February 21st @ 6 p.m.
- March 7th @ 6 p.m.
- March 21st @ 6 p.m.
- April 4th @ 6 p.m.
- May 2nd @ 6 p.m.
- May 16th @ 6 p.m.
- June 6th @ 6 p.m.
- June 20th @ 6 p.m.
I hope to see you at an upcoming Board meeting or school site. Also, the Superintendent and Board have committed to hosting a series of community budget conversations. While many have already occurred at school sites throughout the district, we look forward to continuing the conversations and encourage you to join us at a “Coffee Chat” at a location near you in the coming weeks and months.
Thank you again for the opportunity to serve your student and family!
President, Sacramento City Unified Board of Education
