We look forward to seeing Sac City Unified students starting on September 2 for the 2021-22 school year. Safely reopening our schools to provide our students in-person instruction is the best way to support our students’ academic progress and social and emotional well-being.

Evidence shows that schools can safely reopen using layered mitigation measures to protect the health of students and staff. When these measures are in place, the risk of spreading COVID-19 is greatly reduced.

Our district’s detailed Health and Safety plan uses the same layered strategies that have been shown to stop the spread of COVID-19 and provides a safe learning environment for students. Our district is reopening under the guidance of Sacramento County Public Health (SCPH), California Department of Public Health (CDPH), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). 

We see our district’s health and safety measures working at Sac City Unified, as our district’s positivity rate remains much lower than the county positivity rate. Learn more about current case rates on the SCUSD COVID-19 dashboard at reopeningdashboard.scusd.edu.

However, we must acknowledge that COVID-19 remains a concern in our community and Sacramento County has seen an increase in cases due to the delta variant. Case rates have been consistently lower among children, and most cases remain asymptomatic, but it continues to be important that we all do our part to protect one another by wearing a mask, getting vaccinated, getting tested, and following all health and safety protocols. 

How we keep each other safe in the SCUSD Community:

• Get vaccinated as soon as you are eligible – everyone ages 12 and up is eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccination slows the spread of COVID in communities, prevents symptoms and hospitalizations, and protects others. School staff are required to be vaccinated or undergo weekly testing. 
• Register for SCUSD COVID-19 testing and get tested regularly. Sacramento City Unified offers a unique testing program by providing tests at every school site. We encourage all students and staff to access testing at their school during school hours. Routine testing helps us detect cases and protect each other. It’s easy and pain-free, and can be self-administered. 
• Stay home if you are experiencing any symptoms and get tested for COVID-19.  Follow our district’s Illness and Symptoms Guidelines for Staff and Students for guidance on returning to school after symptoms. If you or a close contact has tested positive for COVID-19, tell your school immediately. Our district will use guidance from California Department of Public Health and the Sacramento County Public Health Decision Forest to determine quarantine requirements, depending on the specific situation and contacts.
• Wear a face mask at all times. Face masks are required indoors and outdoors at SCUSD sites.
• Stay informed. Learn more about our health and safety guidelines at returntogether.scusd.edu/return-health. Check our COVID-19 dashboard and read communications from your principal and district. Attend back to school nights and school site forums. Information and guidance changes frequently and we are committed to providing you with updated information as quickly as possible. 
• Keep your contact information updated. If there is a positive case confirmed in your student’s classroom, we will conduct contact tracing and will reach out to you with instructions and information. Please make sure that your contact information is correct and updated.
