YDSS is the home of both Youth Engagement Services and Foster
Youth Services.
YDSS provides support to teachers and school site administrators
in creating an environment conducive to the achievement of
academic, as well as social-emotional, success for all
students. Services are based upon the philosophy of
building resiliency to assure that students successfully adapt in
the face of adversity and develop social, academic, and
vocational competence.
YDSS programs are built upon seven core values that, if present,
can increase student engagement and success: These building
blocks are:
Out of school time opportunities;
Safe, engaging, youth-friendly climate;
Relationships with positive supportive adults;
Authentic youth voice;
Meaningful opportunity to serve;
Cultural relevance and celebrations;
Targeted prevention and intervention for all youth, including
our highest-risk populations (foster, gang involved, sexually
exploited, etc.).
The Youth Development department strives to assist schools in
building capacity on site around these seven core values and
leveraging additional resources and supports when necessary.
