The Sacramento City Unified School District
offers many types of free or low-cost training to help people grow
personally and professionally. We encourage volunteers to take full
advantage of these resources.
SCUSD’s
Adult, Career and Technical Education Department
offers vocational educational opportunities and services to adult
learners to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to be more
effective citizens, workers, parents and family members. Examples of
classes include: Computer Literacy, English as a Second Language,
Administrative Assistant skills, Bookkeeping, Conversational Spanish and
American Sign Language.
Parent University is another program
which offers free classes at schools and community centers for
parents/guardians of SCUSD students. Classes are open to any interested
person in the community. The program currently offers over 70 different
classes of practical importance to families. Examples include: Active
Parenting, Positive Discipline, How Children Learn & What You Can Do To
Help them—Including Homework, You Can Help Your Child with Reading &
Writing, Mega Skills / The Habits & Attitudes Children Need to Do Well in
School & in Life, Gang Awareness and Prevention for Parents, How to Talk
to Your Children About Drugs, Have It Your Way Fast Food, Show Me the
Money! Getting Your Child a College Education, A Beginner’s Guide to the
Internet, and many others. Upon request, these classes can be held at
a school site.
PIE Meetings
(Parent Information Exchange)
Volunteers are strongly encouraged
to join staff in attending this monthly meeting which provides invaluable
new resources for schools throughout the district and the opportunity to
exchange information and make community connections. Bring your own
lunch… we provide the pie! PIE meetings are held on the last Monday
of each month at SCUSD’s Serna Center from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Staff Development Classes On a
space-available basis, volunteers are welcome to attend many of the
specialized training classes offered for district employees. Examples of
classes which have been presented include: Training for Mandated
Reporters of Child Abuse, Sexual Harassment Prevention, Blood Borne
Pathogens, Youth Asset Development, Emergency Preparedness, First Aid and
CPR. Many of these classes are free. For more information about

Other Training
for Volunteers Training to help volunteers be as effective as
possible can be arranged by the Volunteer Office, and taught by the
appropriate SCUSD department. Examples of topics include: Hazards in the
Workplace, Safety Procedures, Injury Reporting Process, and Playground
