“Special
Education Resource Parents” Have Arrived!
A
New Service to Support
Parents With IEP Questions, Concerns, and/or Disagreements is now
available!
A
new resource is
now available
to parents of students with disabilities!
Over a period of 2 years, the SCUSD Special Education Department has
been providing training to a select group of parents of students with
disabilities. They are called “Special Education (SPED) Resource
Parents”.
The
goal of this program is for veteran SPED parents to provide
information, support, and an avenue of communication between parents
and the district to work through disagreements
before
home-school relationships deteriorate and
before
the parent feels the need to exercise their right to Due Process.
These
specially trained parents have
experienced
all aspects of the special education process over a period of several
years with their own children
and are working as volunteers
to assist parents understand and negotiate the maze called Special
Education. The SPED Resource Parent is trained to assist parents
who are either new to the SPED process and/or have unresolved issues
with their child’s IEP. Resource Parents provide information and
encourage these parents to work within
the system
to reach resolution
to their disagreement(s) by providing linkages to district staff who
will assist in finding a resolution to the problem(s).
School site staff, administration, program
specialists, psychologists, and parents are encouraged to take
advantage of this new, helpful no-cost service by calling 643-9116.
Please leave the name, phone number, and the nature of the concern
and a SPED Resource Parent will return the call either on the same
day or by the following working day. Information shared is
confidential and participation is voluntary.
This is an
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) intervention that has been shown
to be effective approximately 80% successful in resolving the issues.
For more
information, please call Karen Maier, SPED Supervisor at 643-9195 or
9116.
