Frequently Asked Question and Answers:

What are the Mathematics Graduation Requirement for SCUSD?

Students, who initially enrolled in a high school during and after September, 2000, must pass 20 credits in mathematics, including Algebra I, as demonstrated by passing the course or course equivalent and by passing the Algebra I End-Of-Course Examination. Geometry is also required for Class of 2008 and thereafter.

What is the Algebra End-Of-Course Examination (EOC)?

The School Board established The Algebra End-Of-Course [EOC] Examination as a minimum competency exam for all algebra students.  The test is given at the end of the Algebra class.

Who must take the Algebra EOC?

All SCUSD students must pass the EOC examination before they can graduate.    Students have the opportunity to pass the test beginning with 7th grade Algebra.

What if my student took Algebra or Geometry in another school district?

SCUSD respects the reciprocity of academic credits.  A student who fulfilled the algebra requirement when enrolled in another district does not have to take the Algebra EOC exam.

What if my student does not pass the Algebra EOC exam?

A student can take the exam multiple times.  High schools administer the exam a minimum of 2 other times during the school year.  Please contact your school for the dates.

Will special education students have to take the EOC?

Yes.  Special education students cannot receive their high school graduation diploma without passing Algebra and the EOC.  The EOC may be administered with appropriate accommodation as required in each student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).

What about students who are not fluent in English?

English language skills are not tested.   The level of English required will be addressed in a SDAIE Algebra class.

What if parents do not want their students tested?

All students are required to pass the EOC to get a high school diploma from a SCUSD public school.

Who decides what the EOC should cover?

The questions were chosen by SCUSD Algebra teachers and are based on the Algebra Content Standards for California Pubic Schools.  These Standards are considered to be the foundations for student success in future math classes.

What mathematics will the EOC cover?

The problems in the Algebra 1 EOC Examination Clarification are examples of the problems on the test.

What can students do to prepare for the EOC?

The Practice bank contains sample problems from previously administered tests.  Each high school has developed Algebra tutorial classes to help students pass the exam.

How can parents help their students pass the test?

Parents should ask their student’s teachers or principals if the school’s curriculum is aligned to state content standards in mathematics.  Parents will want to know:

  • How teachers are helping students achieve these standards.

  • How parents can help their students at home.
