Mark Hopkins teachers, staff and community are committed to providing a quality education for our students. The programs and strategies we have put in place to meet that goal include the use of culturally responsive teaching strategies, small group interventions during the school day and after-school extended learning programs. We increase student engagement in learning through the use of computers, SMART Boards, document cameras, LCD projectors and a computer lab consisting of 30 computers. Student incentives include “Husky Bucks” for the student store, “Caught You Being Good” tickets with prizes and “Fun Friday Clubs” for students. Our Parent Center and Healthy Start Office provide parents and families access to computers, community announcements, parent training, counseling for students and family and school resources including uniforms and school supplies. These programs and caring staff provide a supportive environment for our students and families.

April 20 officially marked the successful completion of Parents As Partners in Schools (PAPS) first cohort! The second cohort is currently in full swing and will be completed in the next few weeks! PAPS provides parents and community members the opportunity to learn more about being involved in their child’s education, becoming an effective advocate for their child’s needs, gaining leadership skills and improving communication to have effective parent-teacher relationships.

SCUSD Administrators, Mark Hopkins Win ACSA Awards

Three SCUSD administrators and Mark Hopkins Elementary School will be honored by the Association of California School Administrators, Region III, at an awards gala on May 16 at the Hilton Hotel. Mao Vang, director of Assessment, Research and Evaluation, will receive a “Silver Star.” Susan B. Anthony Elementary School Principal Candas Colen (pictured) and Cancy McArn, a director in Human Resources, will both be named “Administrators of the Year.” Mark Hopkins Elementary will receive the Partners in Educational Excellence award for its “Real Men Read Program” in conjunction with 100 Black Men of Sacramento. Congratulations all!

Kings Give Mark Hopkins a Royal Makeover

To celebrate Cesar Chavez Day of Volunteerism on March 27, the Kings rolled up their sleeves to beautify Mark Hopkins Elementary School. The work included new landscaping, fresh paint and creation of a new computer/literacy center and basketball court. The entire team roster was on hand when the spiffed up campus was debuted for students in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Organizations that partnered with the Kings on the project were Wells Fargo, El Dorado Hills Town Center and Waste Management.

Stellar Student Melissa Martinez

Melissa Martinez, a Mark Hopkins Elementary School third grader, was honored by the Board of Education on March 15 as an SCUSD “Stellar Student.” Melissa’s drawing of a flower-filled garden won the Karden Gardens Dream School Garden contest last month. The prize: A garden based on her drawing will be installed at the school next month. Congratulations!

Mark Hopkins Celebrates Valentine’s Day, Black History Month

On Valentine’s Day, Mark Hopkins Elementary School students visited Florin Health Care Center to deliver stuffed animals to residents. The next evening, the school partnered with Rosa Parks Middle School to celebrate Black History Month. Costumes (see photo) were donated by community partner Marla Davis.

Mark Hopkins Student Wins ‘Dream Garden’ for School

Third-grader Melissa Martinez’s drawing of a colorful garden filled with flowers has netted Mark Hopkins Elementary School a “dream” school garden worth thousands of dollars. Melissa’s drawing captured the most votes in the Karden Gardens Dream School Garden Competition, part of last month’s Northern California Home and Landscape Expo. The garden, as designed by Melissa, will feature a variety of purple flowers, yellow sunflowers and a planter of red roses. Construction begins the week of April 2.

Help Mark Hopkins Elementary Win a School Garden

Mark Hopkins Elementary School could win a “dream” school garden, but it needs your help! Third-grader Melissa Martinez’s drawing of her dream garden is one of three top finalists in the Karden Gardens Dream School Garden Competition, which is part of the Northern California Home and Landscape Expo. Melissa can win a garden for the school if she gets the most votes during the Expo, which will be held at Cal Expo January 27-29.

Mark Hopkins’ Students Receive Hair Cuts

The Mark Hopkins’ community was thrilled to welcome It’s All About You Salon to their Parent Resource Center recently. The salon was at the school to give free haircuts to students. Forty students received haircuts in about a two hour window. The students loved their haircuts!

Just in time for winter break, students at Mark Hopkins Elementary School will get free haircuts on Thursday (December 22) courtesy “It’s All About You” salon.

Salon owner Connie Harris and two stylists will cut children’s hair from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on campus. Mark Hopkins is located at 2221 Matson Drive in Sacramento. Media must check-in at the office.

Mark Hopkins Students Celebrated at Assembly

Mark Hopkins Elementary School celebrated and honored student scholars in an Awards Assembly on December 5. Students who scored “proficient” or “advanced” on last spring’s California Standards Tests (CSTs) received green school T-shirts. Students who scored a perfect score received gold “600 Club” school shirts. This year’s celebration was sponsored by Lifeline Securities and Vision 2000. In addition, “Rising Stars,” students that moved up a proficiency band, have been invited to an afternoon of games and arts and crafts.

Schools Host Annual Hmong New Year Celebration

The annual Hmong New Year Celebration drew more than 300 students, parents and community members to Rosa Parks Middle School on November 16. The celebration included a community potluck of traditional Hmong dishes, a presentation on the history of Hmong people, a slideshow, a ball toss demonstration, traditional Hmong attire, music and dance, hip-hop dances and a break dance crew. The event was hosted by Mark Hopkins Elementary School, Rosa Parks’ Parent Resource Center and Youth & Family Resource Center, and the City of Sacramento Parks and Recreation Department.

Mark Hopkins Students Get Out in the Community

Mark Hopkins Elementary School students who participate in the Real Men Read Program sponsored by 100 Black Men were treated to a very special evening recently at the Radisson Hotel. The young scholars were invited to a dinner that honored Judge Vance Raye for his accomplishments in the Sacramento area. The seven young men enjoyed the special evening. Also, Mark Hopkins students recently attended the D.I.V.A. (Determined Intelligent Valued American Young Ladies) Conference sponsored by the Sacramento affiliate of the National Black Child Development Institute (BCDI).

Red Ribbon Week Kick-Off at Mark Hopkins

A kick-off assembly for national Red Ribbon Week (October 24-28) was held Friday morning at Mark Hopkins Elementary School. Internationally acclaimed opera duo Roy Stevens and Annalisa Winberg, who perform as AmazingVox, performed at two assemblies for students. Following the singers, student hip-hop dancers and spoken-word poetry artists performed a rap (“It’s Up to Me to Be Drug Free”). Students in the audience wore sunglasses to support the event’s theme “Shade-Out Drugs.” Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country.

A) SCUSD Kids Help Shatter World Reading Record on Thursday
Students at 30 elementary schools to participate in ‘Read for the Record’ with 2 million others nationwide

Thousands of SCUSD students will participate in “Read for the Record” on Thursday, a nationwide campaign to break the world record for the most adults and children reading the same book on the same day.

The book is “Llama Llama Red Pajama” by Anna Dewdney, a sweet rendering of the trials of bedtime separation anxiety that is a favorite among young children. In classrooms across Sacramento City Unified, teachers will be reading the book to students, many using projectors to show the colorful illustrations on wide screens.

State Preschool Part Day Programs

SCUSD provides part day State funded preschool for eligible parents. The family monthly income must be under a certain amount.

Head Start Part and Extended Day Programs

Federally funded preschool and home-based services for children ages 3 to 5 with comprehensive support services for families, including parenting support, social services, health and nutrition, mental health, child development, and special education support.

SCUSD provides Head Start funded part day preschool programs. The family monthly income must be under a certain amount.
