SCUSD Statement on National Anthem, Pledge Protests
Across the country — and in SCUSD schools — middle and high school students are peacefully exercising their First Amendment rights to free expression by sitting or kneeling during the National Anthem and the Pledge of Alliance.
Below is the district’s official statement on these activities. If you have any questions, please call Communications.
“The tradition of athletes standing during the national anthem at sporting events has a long history in Sacramento City Unified Schools and is supported by the district as an appropriate way to express respect for our country. However, as our nation participates in a sensitive and emotionally charged dialogue on race and equality, many athletes – professional, college and high school – are opting to exercise their First Amendment right to free speech by peacefully kneeling during the anthem’s playing. SCUSD supports these students’ right to free expression and will take no action that would interfere with that right.”
