Great California ShakeOut
As a reminder, this Thursday (October 16), the District will participate in the Great California ShakeOut, an annual event that gives the community an opportunity to practice earthquake safety.
We are anticipating that all school sites and the Serna Center will participate in this drill, which is scheduled for 10:16 a.m. on Thursday. As you are probably aware, state Education Code (section 3282) requires, as part of the Comprehensive School Safety Plan, that public elementary schools conduct a “drop” procedure once every quarter and public secondary schools conduct a “drop” procedure once a semester. Participation in the ShakeOut drill will comply with this regulation.
Before Thursday, please visit www.shakeout.org/california/ to watch a video showing what “Drop, Cover and Hold On” looks like in practice. The website also has PDFs of informational flyers that you may wish to provide to parents and staff.
At Serna, there will be a building announcement once the drill has begun and another when the drill is over. Please inform your visitors of this drill and what is expected.
Safety is a concern and responsibility shared by all employees of the District.
