Documentary Screening of “Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine”
There will be an event on February 5 at Mesa Verde High School, which will feature a screening of “Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine,” a documentary about the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard. Shepard, a gay freshman at the University of Wyoming, was lured from a bar in Laramie, Wyoming, by two men who tortured him and tethered him to a fence, leaving him to die. A week later, he succumbed to his injuries. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Shepard’s parents, Dennis and Judy Shepard, who started the Matthew Shepard Foundation after their son’s death.
The event is scheduled for 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. on Friday, February 5, in the small gym of Mesa Verde High School, 7501 Carriage Drive, Citrus Heights. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
Please help spread the word to teachers, students and administrators who you think might be interested. I know Mesa Verde is a bit far for many of you, but I think it will be a powerful event for anyone interested in work around acceptance, equity and/or LGBTQ issues.
Anyone interested in attending is asked to RSVP at www.sanjuan.edu/mattshepard.
