District now offers fingerprinting service to prospective employees - It's been 1 year!

On July 21, 2004, The Sacramento City Unified School District celebrated a one year mile stone with it's Live Scan fingerprint machine. The district ordered the state of the art all digital fingerprint machine in 2001 at a cost of $23,000. It was not used until the district moved into it's new headquarters at the Serna Center. Originally Live Scan was purchased so that perspective district employees would not have to travel several miles away from the Serna Center to be fingerprinted. The idea was to have a one stop shopping for individuals who had been offered employment with the district. In November, 2003, Sgt. Vince Matranga of the district's Police Services opened up the fingerprinting service to the public. " I thought this would be a great way for the district to generate a steady stream of revenue and offer a valuable service to the public." "It was a win win situation for everyone" said Matranga.

In a one year period, Sgt. Matranga and Officer Jeff Lehr have fingerprinted a total of 2,362 individuals. Out of that total, 1,686 individuals were either perspective district employees or school site volunteers. 676 people were fingerprinted for outside agencies. Matranga expects the total number fingerprinted in 2003/2004 to double over the next year to well over 4,000 people. There are over 1.4 million companies, educational systems, hospitals, law enforcement agencies, retail businesses, etc. in the State of California that require perspective employees to be fingerprinted. That list is growing and should be over 2 million by the end of this year.

Through the use of it's Live Scan fingerprint machine, the district's Police Services Department has generated $57,165.00 over the past fiscal year. Because of the great demand for fingerprint services in the Sacramento area, that number should double for this fiscal year.

The Distric's Police Services office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Should you have any questions, please contact Sgt. Vince Matranga at 643-7444.
