DEFINITION
Assist the principal in planning, implementing, and administering the
instructional program or the pupil services program; and do other work as
required. Assumes the responsibilities of the principal in the
absence of the principal.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: Possession of a valid credential which authorizes work
in an administrative capacity at the high school level issued by the
California Commission on Teacher Credentialing is required.

Education: A bachelor's degree from an approved institution is
required. Advanced degrees are preferred.
and
Experience: A minimum of five years of certificated experience in
public or comparable private schools is required, and preference will be
given for experience at both the junior high/middle school level and the
high school level. While additional administrative or supervisory
experience is not required, preference will be given to persons with
additional experience in an administrative, supervisory, or specialist
capacity.
TYPICAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A.
Instructional Services
-
Develops
the master schedule of classes and room assignments, the master
schedule of school events, and the daily bulletin in some schools.

Observes
teachers in the classroom and reports evaluation to the principal.

Assists
the principal in the implementation of the district's curriculum
program by assuming responsibility for the use of audiovisual
equipment, textbooks, and courses of study; and also serves in a
liaison capacity with Curriculum Development Services Coordinator.
May serve on district curriculum committees.

Maintains
the general direction and control of all student body activities.

Prepares
the instructional budget.

Attends
meetings and conferences and serves on committees as requested by
principal and others.

Assists
in the evaluation of department chairpersons, student activities
advisors, and most classified positions assigned to the instructional
function.

Supervises
the librarian.

Supervises
student teachers.

Administers
the field trip program.
-
Develops
and coordinates articulation programs with feeder schools.
B.
Pupil Services
-
Assists
the principal in planning, implementing, and administering the pupil
services program, including supervision of counseling, guidance,
testing, attendance, and data processing services, and of health
department schedules.

Enforces
disciplinary regulations, settles minor disciplinary referrals, and
prepares case data for major disciplinary cases which may lead to
suspension or expulsion.

Supervises
the counseling staff and dean, providing information on new rules and
policies, conducting training meetings, evaluating the effectiveness
of the program, and personally assisting with exceptional cases.

Conducts
conferences with law enforcement, probation, and welfare personnel
regarding students.

Counsels
with pupils and parents regarding problems of the pupils.

Develops
and coordinates articulation programs with other schools, and, if
assigned to a senior high school, assists students with college
scholarship information, applications, and awards.

Attends
meetings and conferences.

Supervises
the substitute and home teacher program in some schools.

Develops
the daily bulletin in some schools.

Assists
in the evaluation of counselors, nurses, special education teachers,
the registrar, the dean, and classified positions assigned by the
principal to the pupil personnel function.
