BASIC FUNCTION:

Supports District information systems. Operates computer and network systems and equipment that provide on-line information on a daily basis for District sites, departments, students, staff, or community.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Performs tasks that include server console operation; execution of application software programs; system backup and restore functions; management and execution of off-site storage program; various computer printing jobs including paychecks, and payroll reports; maintaining adequate forms and stock supplies; and setup and operate of high-volume optical scanning equipment. Documents, maintains, or enhances documentation for these tasks.

Monitor status of computer and network systems. Monitor the status of complete systems such as Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN). Monitor the status of components of these systems such as servers, workstations, modems, passive and intelligent hubs, bridges, routers, and electrical power backup systems. Call appropriate specialists, such as maintenance vendors or District employees, when needed to correct system or component problems. Assist these specialists in problem resolution.

Establish and maintain, in conjunction with other appropriate District offices, effective procedures for the control of high-value or high-risk items, for example, blank warrants. Develop and execute procedures that monitor indicators of system quality, security, and data integrity. Assist in the development of preventative maintenance schedules and procedures.

Develops and enlarges technical expertise in computer and network systems that supports a broad range of services to the school district. Coordinates with network specialists, help desk specialists, end-users, vendors, other Operations Specialists, other technical people, and management to provide reliable information resources for District needs. Develops, documents, and maintains schedules for operations specialists to execute.

Perform the above tasks concurrently, in a three shift per day environment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Two years of progressively more responsible experience in a broad range of computer and network operations support areas. Experience must include a good understanding of the operations role, experience with the software applications, tools, techniques and utilities used by the District, experience with District computer operating systems and network operating systems, experience with computer and network equipment in use within the District, an understanding of environmental constraints and impacts, and experience with managing maintenance support.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Problem solving skills

  • Methodologies for managing technical change on a proactive basis

ABILITY TO:

  • Use commonly available office automation tools, such as word processing packages, spreadsheet packages, database packages, presentation packages, and communications packages

  • Must be available for mandatory overtime during critical times

  • Must be able to work in a manner and at a time so as not to interfere with customer productivity.

  • Alternative work schedules and/or telecommuting may be mandatory to prevent end-user interference

  • Effectively work with program managers and site personnel

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Physical, mental and emotional stamina to endure long hours under sometimes stressful conditions

  • Exposure to dust when equipment is installed or moved
