DEFINITION

            To perform difficult and specialized technical work requiring detailed knowledge of transportation procedures, policies, and precedents; to perform work of above average difficulty requiring a high level of initiative, judgment, and organizational ability; and to perform tasks which require the use of a computer and typewriter.

DISTINGUISHING  CHARACTERISTICS

            Position is characterized by the total responsibility for a major technical function within a department. The ability to initiate and complete difficult tasks independently is significant in this class. Decisions frequently have the effect of finality, with errors being costly in terms of lost time and/or negative public relations.

EXAMPLES  OF  DUTIES

            Assumes responsibility of finding an appropriate elementary school placement for students whose regular school of attendance is over-enrolled; arranges with the Transportation Department for busing; informs the home school/receiving school of transportation arrangements; provides copies of work sheet to bus driver supervisors and bus drivers; puts all information into computer; sends print-out to home school/receiving school; maintains current print-out of all cluster students and busing cancellations for reference; handles unusual or difficult problems relating to sending/receiving school arrangements; interprets rules and regulations to the public and handles difficult and complex public relations tasks; assists in the development of office procedures; performs paraprofessional administrative duties; converses with and furnishes information to the public, principals, assistant superintendents, and other district personnel at the elementary level; performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM  QUALIFICATIONS

            Knowledge  of:

            Modern office methods and procedures, especially efficient telephone techniques and letter and report writing;

                        Office machines and some skill in their operation;

                        Proper English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation;

                        Technical practices and principles of the district.

and

            Ability  to:

            Learn, interpret, and apply appropriate techniques for placing cluster students in an appropriate school;

            Perform complex technical and clerical work with speed and accuracy with a minimum of supervision;

                        Take responsibility and use tact and good judgment in fulfilling responsibilities;

            Deal effectively with a wide variety of personalities and situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action;

            Maintain technical records and prepare reports;

                        Operate a computer, printer, typewriter, and calculator with speed and accuracy.

and

            Skills:

                        Typing speed of 50 net words a minute;

                        Ability to operate computer systems equipment.

and

            Experience:

            Five years of progressively responsible experience in general technical/clerical work including one year involving assignments requiring independent work habits and one year in an assignment dealing with school district busing.

and

            Education:

            Equivalent to graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by special courses in the operation of computer systems.
