DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to perform a wide variety of difficult and
complex clerical tasks, some of which may require the use of a typewriter.
JOB
CHARACTERISTICS
Employees in this class perform a wide variety of duties which require the
exercise of independent judgment in the selection of the method and in the
application of established procedures and policies in order to carry out
an assignment; supervision or guidance from higher authority is available,
but the work is usually reviewed on completion rather than in progress.
Frequent public contacts in person or by telephone require the application
of established policies and procedures, but questions are referred to
higher level authority when a procedure has not been established.
Supervision of one or more employees is typical of positions in this
class.
Clerk III is differentiated from clerk II primarily by the level of
difficulty of tasks assigned, the extent of independent judgment
exercised, the kind of supervision received, the nature of public
contacts, and the typical responsibility for supervision of others.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES
Performs a wide variety of difficult and responsible clerical work which
may involve the supervision of other workers who are typing, checking,
recording information, coding, compiling information for and making
reports, and maintaining files; receives and directs information for
processing, coding, and key punching; enters and retrieves data for making
reports; interviews persons in person or by telephone, including persons
having important business with administrators or teachers; furnishes
desired information, refers to proper source, or arranges an appointment
with a superior; answers questions and assists administrators and teachers
in regard to such problems as scholastic records, program changes, and
admissions and withdrawals; supervises the work involved in maintaining
attendance records and checking absentee students; personally prepares the
monthly enrollment and average daily attendance reports for a high school;
verifies group insurance medical claims; enrolls employees into group
health plans; answers questions in regard to insurance coverage and claims
of employees; arranges and accounts for insurance premium payments of
retired employees and employees on leaves of absence; issues or permits
for the use of school facilities outside of regular school hours;
evaluates or assists in the evaluation of student transcripts; assists
school personnel in the selection of appropriate audio-visual materials
for use with courses of study at various grade levels; and performs
related duties as required.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Modern office methods and practices, including letter and report writing,
receptionist and telephone techniques, and filing systems;
Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation;
Laws, regulations, rules, and policies governing the school district and
ability to apply them with good judgment.

devise or recommend improvements as necessary;

Operate common office machines.
