DEFINITION
Under immediate supervision, to perform a variety of routine clerical
tasks, some of which may require the use of a typewriter.
JOB
CHARACTERISTICS
Employees in this class perform a wide variety of miscellaneous duties
which are ordinarily simple, performed within the limits of fixed
procedures, and regularly or frequently repeated. Changes in
procedures and new tasks are explained in detail, and any different or new
situations are referred to the supervisor. An employee who has
learned his job may require little attention from the supervisor, but
supervision is always available.
Employees in this class may have considerable contact with students and
teachers involving some phase of the employee's work. They are not
required to have an overall knowledge of the procedures or policies of
their own unit.
Although typing is a requirement for most positions in this class, the
percentage of time spent in typing varies considerably.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES
Sorts, arranges, alphabetizes, and files materials; pulls requested
materials from files; assists students and teachers at the counter and
answers the telephone, giving information on routine procedural or
directional questions or referring the call to the proper authority;
addresses and stuffs envelopes; assembles and staples material; opens and
distributes mail; types lists, requisitions, stencils, master sheets,
reports, letters, and memoranda; enrolls students, types record cards, and
posts data; may prepare records for microfilming; may rewind film, check
for defects, and splice breaks; may issue textbooks to students and
teachers and keep related card files; may serve as library clerk, charging
out books, preparing books for circulation, and typing catalog cards; may
operate mimeograph machine; may relieve on the switchboard; and performs
related duties as required.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Ability to:
Perform simple arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately;
Understand and carry out written instructions;
Work cooperatively with others;
Meet the public tactfully and courteously, and to answer routine questions
in person and by telephone;
Operate common office machines.
and
Skill:
For positions requiring typing: Typing speed of 40 net words a
minute.
and
Education:
Equivalent to graduation from high school, preferably including or
supplemented by courses in typing and office practices.
