DEFINITION
Under general supervision to perform specialist work involving student
admission and enrollment, student attendance, secretarial and clerical
services to staff, supervision of a small clerical support staff and
related tasks as required.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES
Performs a wide variety of duties requiring broad knowledge of the
Independent Study School program; performs all registrar duties including
enrolling students into program and checking students out of program;
handles student records and transcripts; adds, deletes, and changes grades
for data control; maintains separate files on ISS students in addition to
official and other periodic attendance reports; records student daily
attendance including total hours, grade and final grade; identifies
students with attendance problems and prepares hearing recommendation for
supervisor's approval; records results of hearings on student attendance
card; contacts students and/or parents by telephone and/or letter
regarding attendance problems; prepares reports to Foster Youth Program;
communicates with probation officers, social workers, and the County
Welfare Office regarding student attendance; makes appointments with
students for teachers daily; keeps active files on entrance and
student/teacher contracts and all student activity; interviews office
visitors and telephone callers and answers questions concerning program
and activities or refers persons to other sources of information; provides
secretarial services for staff; prepares requisitions, purchase orders and
warehouse orders; maintains staff attendance records and prepares
payrolls; maintains records of current year expenditures; requests
substitutes for absent teachers; issues work permit applications; provides
information to students on ROP and work experience programs; and performs
other related duties as required.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Modern office methods and practices, including letter and report writing,
receptionist and telephone techniques, and filing systems;
Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation;
Common office machines and some skill in their operation.

Ability to:
Learn current laws, regulations, rules and policies governing the school
district generally and the Independent Study School program specifically
and to apply them with good judgment in a variety of situations;
Perform responsible and difficult clerical and technical work with
accuracy, speed, and a minimum of supervision;
Understand and follow, quickly and accurately, oral and written
instructions on complex matters;
Compile and maintain accurate and complete records and reports;
Analyze situations and to adopt an effective course of action;
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships
with staff, students, and parents.

Skill:
Typing speed of 45 net words a minute.
and
Experience:
Two years of varied and responsible clerical work, preferably including at
least one year in a California school district and/or contact with the
public.
and
Education:
Equivalent to graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by
courses in business or office management. College attendance may be
substituted for one year of the required experience.
