DEFINITION
This position is created for the sole purpose of meeting the contractual
agreement between the Mental Health's primary Intervention Program and the
Sacramento City Unified School District.
JOB
CHARACTERISTICS
In a playroom setting, the Child Guidance Assistant establishes a warm,
supportive, caring environment and encourages project children to engage
in nondirective therapeutic play. Is responsible for guiding
children in the appropriate use of playroom materials as well as
maintaining the playroom environment. Works under the general
supervision of the project coordinator and the principal.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIE
S
Participates in a minimum of 2 hours per week of training and/or
supervision; establishes rapport and warm, meaningful relationships with
referred children; uses effective listening strategies, creative play
materials and games with individual children participating in the project;
establishes an atmosphere to encourage children's self-expression,
self-esteem, and responsible behavior through one-to-one interactions;
assists in the screening, assessment, placement, and monitoring progress
of project pupils; maintains the playroom and materials.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to:
Function as a supportive, nonthreatening, nonjudgemental caretaker capable
of active listening and conducting nondirective play;
Ability to set appropriate limits for behavior and employ discipline
techniques when appropriate;
Must be able to demonstrate the above in both oral interview and written
response.

Experience:
Recent successful experience with young children, such as youth groups,
recreation programs, classroom experience.

Education:
High school graduate.
