DEFINITION
Under general direction, to perform skilled carpentry work, supervise and
assist a crew of journeymen carpenters performing maintenance and repair
of structures, equipment, and buildings; assembly and installation of
finished carpentry.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES
Assigns daily work and assists a crew of carpenters in the field or shop,
inspects work in progress and upon completion, to ensure it meets required
standards; estimates time and materials costs; builds and repairs tables,
shelves, desks, playground equipment, and fixtures; constructs wooden
structures, such as barricades, fences, and scaffolds, and performs rough
and finished carpentry on schools and administration buildings; performs
hand and bench work in carpentry shop; operates planers, joiners, drill
presses, power saws, and other woodworking machinery; and performs related
duties as required.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Standard practices, methods, materials, and tools of the trade;
Cabinet-making and finished carpentry;
Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
and
Ability to:
Effectively supervise a small group of skilled workers performing
maintenance work, finished and rough carpentry and shop work;
Interpret and work from penciled sketches, drawings, plans, blueprints,
and oral instructions.
and
Experience:
Five years experience as a journeyman carpenter, as well as general
knowledge in cabinetmaking and finished woodworking.
and
Education:
High school graduation or equivalent.
and
Special Requirements:
Employees in this classification shall furnish their own hand tools and be
required to maintain them in safe/sharp condition and proper order.
