DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to operate either Type I or Type II school bus
over designated routes to transport students to and from school.
JOB
CHARACTERISTICS
Bus driver II is differentiated from bus driver I by the size of the
vehicle operated and the number of students transported. Employees in the
class of bus driver I are not permitted to drive vehicles with maximum
load capacity of more than 16 passengers as prescribed by the California
Vehicle Code.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES
Drives a bus Type I or II daily over designated routes in accordance with
time schedules, picking up and discharging students; escorts students
across the street, stopping traffic when necessary; may transport students
and teachers on field trips to various locations, choosing the best route
and meeting time schedules for departure and arrival; maintains order
among students being transported, following district policies regarding
the disciplining of students and contact with parents and other persons;
services buses and vans daily with gas and oil and checks tires and
battery; keeps exterior and interior of vehicles clean and assists in
maintaining vehicles in safe operating condition; keeps records of
mileage, fuel, and oil, and prepares reports of driving hazards and
incidents; maintains an updated route sheet (left and right instructions);
and performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Safe driving practices;
Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code, the Education Code, and
the CHP School Bus Driver's Handbook;
Local geography of metropolitan area;
First aid practices.
and
Ability to:
Operate a school bus, exercising good judgment and extreme caution;
Maintain order among students on the assigned vehicle;
Learn a designated route, appropriate stops, and traffic hazards;
Follow oral and written directions.
and
License:
Possession of a State of California Class II driver's license and a school
bus driver's certificate.
and
Experience:
Satisfactorily complete a course of training with a minimum of twenty (20)
hours of classroom instruction and forty (40) hours of "behind the
wheel" instruction prior to assignment as a school bus driver or
submit satisfactory evidence of previous experience as a school bus driver
in the state of California and complete a minimum of four (4) hours of
"behind the wheel" instruction with this district prior to
assignment.

Education:
Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade.
