DEFINITION

            Under general supervision, to perform a wide variety of difficult clerical tasks and to transcribe and prepare brailled, typed and other instructional material for use by classroom teachers in the educational program for visually handicapped children, some of which may require the use of a typewriter.

EXAMPLES  OF  DUTIES

            Directs distribution of instructional materials for visually handicapped program and transposes textbooks, supplementary books and pamphlets from printed form to braille; translates braille readers and other books into printed form; prepares supplementary instructional aids in braille or printed form as needed for educational program for the blind; sorts, arranges, alphabetizes, catalogues and files materials and books; maintains use and distribution record of books, pamphlets and other instructional aids used in the program; types lists, requisitions, stencils, master sheets, reports letters and memoranda; types record cards and posts data; participates in and directs assembling and distribution of supplies and materials; and performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM  QUALIFICATIONS

            Knowledge  of:

            Braille alphabet and braille typewriters;

            Modern office methods and practices;

            Correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation;

            Characteristics and traits common to visually handicapped children.

and

            Ability  to:

            Read and write braille, including transposing from printed form to braille form;

            Understand and carry out written instructions;

            Perform responsible clerical work with speed and accuracy;

            Work cooperatively with others;

            Compile and maintain accurate and complete records and reports;

            Operate braille typewriter, standard typewriter, and common office machines.

and

            Skills:

                        Typing speed of 45 net words a minute and skill in the operation of a braille typewriter.

and

            Experience:

            Two years of varied experience in typing and clerical work and some previous experience in transcribing braille work.

and

            Education:

 

                        Equivalent to graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in braille.

and

            Special:

                        Braille certification from Library of Congress.
