DEFINITION

            Under direction, to perform professional level of work and skills in backflow prevention and water treatment, maintaining, repairing, servicing, testing and installing various equipment, chemicals and controls.

EXAMPLES  OF  DUTIES

            Perform skilled work in maintaining, inspecting and servicing boilers, chillers, and cooling towers, and maintaining correct balance of chemicals in the water system, so as to keep the system free of corrosion build up; repair low-water feeders, circulating pumps and controls of boilers when necessary; assist plumbers in repairing or replacing boiler or hot water heater relief valves, water pressure reducing valves, water air vents, tridicators and related controls; test backflow prevention devices.  These duties are limited to those performed by Backflow Prevention Technician and/or Stationary Engineer.

MINIMUM  QUALIFICATIONS

            Knowledge  of:

            All types of boilers, boiler controls, electrical and air thermostats, pumps, domestic hot-water supply systems, and water treatment and control of boilers;

            Methods of repairing low-water feeders and circulating pumps and boiler controls;

            Refrigeration cycle and operation, and minor maintenance and repair of components of refrigeration systems;

            Water supply systems of swimming pools and water treatment for swimming pools;

            Methods for installation, maintenance, and testing of backflow prevention devices.

and

            Ability  to:

            Use all types of pipe wrenches, electric drills, drill presses, pipe threaders, and other types of special equipment necessary to operate, repair and maintain all equipment listed, including voltmeters and ammeters;

            Read, interpret, and work from drawings and specifications.

and

            Skills:

                        Mechanical aptitude and equipment skill to perform duties as listed.

and

            Experience:

            Two years recent practical experience as a journeyman Plumber, Backflow Prevention Technician, Stationary Engineer or related experience.

and

            Education:

                        High school graduation or equivalent;

                        Additional related course work in plumbing and heating is desirable;

                        Must possess a valid Back-Flow Preventions Testing License.
