DEFINITION
Under supervision, to service district automotive equipment, primarily
school buses; to assist transportation mechanics in the maintenance and
minor repair of buses and other automotive equipment; and to identify and
report major or complex mechanical difficulties.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES
Inspects, lubricates, services and makes minor adjustments on buses, cars,
trucks, and other power-driven equipment; drains and refills crankcases;
services gear boxes with lubricant; replaces lubricant fittings; maintains
lubrication records; inspects batteries for water level; checks tires;
changes and repairs tires; replaces light bulbs and fuses; makes emergency
road calls; makes minor mechanical repairs in the field; steam cleans
vehicles; keeps area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition; and
performs related work as required.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Oiling, greasing, steam, and otherwise servicing automotive equipment;
Principles of preventive maintenance;
Types, grades and uses of standard fuels and lubricants;
Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code, CHP School Bus Driver's
Handbook, and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles
in transporting students.

Ability to:
Maintain simple time, mileage and servicing records and read lubrication
charts;
Identify basic automotive parts and equipment and basic mechanic's hand
tools;
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
Change and repair tires and tubes;
Work effectively with other employees.

License:
Possession of a State of California Class II driver's license.
and
Experience:
Two years of experience in general automotive servicing and minor
maintenance and repair work.

Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the tenth grade.
