DEFINITION

            Under general supervision, at a regular district high school, supervise and personally perform daily student attendance accounting; supervise clerical staff and students assisting in attendance accounting; prepare or monitor attendance reports and attendance records; and do relate work as required.

JOB  CHARACTERISTICS

            Employees in this class perform a wide variety of duties which require the exercise of independent judgment and discretion in handling problems which may arise.  Frequent public contacts in person or by telephone require the application of established policies and procedures, but questions are referred to high authority when a procedure has not been established.  Supervision of one or more employees and students is typical of this class.

            Attendance Technician II is differentiated from Attendance Technician I primarily by the level of difficulty of tasks assigned, the extent of independent judgment exercised, the kind of supervision received, the nature of public contacts, and the typical responsibility for supervision of others.

            Typing, possibly including on a computer terminal, is requirement for all positions in this class, but the percentage of time spent in typing varies considerably.

EXAMPLES  OF  DUTIE S

            Trains and supervises clerical staff and students as available, and supervises or personally performs daily attendance accounting work required to keep accurate school attendance records showing the attendance of each student by school period; waits on students in attendance office and prepares and issues admit slips to class, and permits to leave school; checks with parents to verify absences; records absences to school absence ledger and reports recurring absences to the dean or vice principal, pupil services; coordinates and prepares hearing reports; reports patterns of attendance problems to counselors; reminds students to bring excuses to receive excused absence and follows up to insure excusals are received; prepares school attendance reports; coordinates with outside agencies; maintains records required for attendance accounting; types records, reports, stencils, and operates office machines such as calculator, mimeograph, computer terminal, duplicating machine, mark sense readers.  Establishes, maintains, and/or supports standards of personal conduct and discipline in accordance with the current discipline policy approved by the Board of Education; performs other duties reasonably related to the job class.

MINIMUM  QUALIFICATIONS

            Knowledge  of:

            District attendance accounting procedures; modern office methods and practices, including letter and report writing, receptionist and telephone techniques and filing systems;

            Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation;

            Laws, regulations, rules, and policies governing the school district.

and

            Ability  to:

            Apply laws, regulations, rules and policies concerning student attendance including acceptable reasons for excused absence and late arrival;

            Supervise clerical staff and student assistants and personally perform difficult clerical work in maintaining accurate daily school attendance reports;

            Perform responsible and difficult clerical work with accuracy and speed;

            Make arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately;

            Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action;

            Work cooperatively with others, meet the public tactfully and courteously and to answer questions in person and by telephone;

            Compile and maintain accurate and complete records and reports;

            Operate common office machines, preferably including computer terminals.

and

            Skill:

                        Typing speed of 45 net words a minute;

                        Pass a clerical test.

and

            Education  and  Experience:

            Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and three years of general clerical and typing experience, including at least one in attendance duties or a closely related area.
