DEFINITION
Under general or direct supervision, personally perform daily student
attendance accounting; supervise students assisting in attendance
accounting; prepare attendance reports and maintain attendance records;
and do related work as required.
JOB
CHARACTERISTICS
Employees in this class perform a wide variety of duties which require the
exercise of judgment and discretion. They may work in a situation
where there is a clerical supervisor and where procedures and methods are
prescribed. Following initial instructions and within the scope of
the assignment, employees in this class are expected to exercise good
judgment and discretion in handling problems which may arise. They
may have considerable contact with students and teachers.
Typing, possibly including on a computer terminal, is a requirement for
all positions in this class, but the percentage of time spent in typing
varies considerably.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES
Trains and supervises students as available, and personally performs daily
attendance accounting work required to keep accurate school attendance
records showing the attendance of each student by school period; waits on
students in attendance office and prepares and issues admit slips to
class, and permits to leave school; checks with parents to verify
absences; records absences to school absence ledger and reports recurring
absences to the vice principal, pupil services; reports patterns of
attendance problems to counselors; reminds students to bring excuses to
receive excused absence and follows up to insure excusals are received;
prepares school attendance reports; maintains records required for
attendance accounting; performs other clerical work in the school office
as assigned; types records, reports, stencils, and operates office
machines such as calculator, mimeograph, computer terminals, duplicating
machine, mark sense readers. Establishes, maintains, and/or supports
standards of personal conduct and discipline in accordance with the
current discipline policy approved by the Board of Education; performs
other duties reasonably related to the job class.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
District attendance accounting procedures;
Modern office methods and practices, including letter and report writing,
receptionist and telephone techniques, and filing systems;
Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Ability to:
Learn and apply district rules and policies concerning student attendance
including acceptable reasons for excused absence and late arrival;
Supervise student assistants and personally perform difficult clerical
work in maintaining accurate daily school attendance records;
Perform responsible clerical work with accuracy and speed;
Learn and interpret specific laws, rules, and policies and to apply them
with good judgment in a variety of situations;
Make arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately;
Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action;
Work cooperatively with others;
Meet the public tactfully and courteously and to answer questions in
person and by telephone;
Compile and maintain accurate and complete records and reports;
Operate common office machines.

Skills:
Typing speed of 45 net words a minute;
Must pass a clerical test.
and
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and three years
of general clerical and typing experience, including at least one in
attendance duties or a closely related area.
