DEFINITION
Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of manual labor and
maintenance tasks associated with the repair, removal, and/or
encapsulation of building materials containing asbestos.
Participates in the installation of non-asbestos insulation at heat supply
lines, boilers, hot water tanks, and other areas and/or equipment.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES
Under immediate supervision of an Asbestos Repair Foreman, performs small
scale removal of asbestos and the re-application of insulating materials;
assists in conducting asbestos inspections throughout school buildings;
removes bulk samples from various building materials prior to laboratory
testing and completes all records required for this activity; seals off
and prepares areas to be worked on; performs all cleaning, bagging, and
other necessary operations to decontaminate area, equipment, and clothing
used; applies wetting agents, seals, and other encapsulants to asbestos
containing areas; uses glove bag procedures for removal of pipe insulation
materials; uses a variety of equipment related to asbestos abatement
including hand tools, vacuum cleaners, sprayers; uses approved respirators
and other protective equipment including impermeable hoods, booties,
coveralls, and gloves while performing abatement duties.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Standard practices, procedures techniques, tools, equipment, and supplies
used in asbestos abatement;
Occupational hazards of asbestos removal, repair, and/or encapsulation
including safety precautions required;
Protective equipment and clothing to be used when working with asbestos
containing material;
Proper procedures for "setting-up"
to remove, contain, or temporarily store asbestos materials.
and
Ability to:
Use all materials, tools, and equipment required to properly and safely
execute asbestos abatement;
Interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, as well as oral
and written directions;
Work in confined spaces and high places using ladders and/or scaffolds and
work under adverse conditions;
Execute asbestos removal, repair, and/or encapsulation without immediate
supervision;
Work cooperatively with others.

Experience:
At least one year of direct experience performing asbestos abatement
activities.
and
Education:
Equivalent to graduation from high school;
Preference will be given to applicants who have completed accredited
training courses on asbestos abatement activities.
and
Special Requirements:
Must pass a physical examination by an occupational physician as required
by OSHA regulation;
Must be able to wear properly fitted asbestos protective mask, if
necessary, and other protective clothing/equipment over extended periods
of time (up to eight hours daily) in order to complete assigned tasks.
