DEFINITION
Under direction, to perform journeyman level of work and skills
maintaining, repairing, servicing, and installing a variety of air
conditioning and refrigeration equipment and associated controls.
EXAMPLES
OF DUTIES
Performs skilled work in maintaining, repairing, servicing, and installing
all types of air conditioning (cooling), chillers, heat pumps, and
refrigeration (refrigerators, freezers, walk-in boxes, etc.) equipment;
inspects equipment and/or controls and diagnoses problems and
malfunctions; verifies work needed to be performed; estimates time and
material needed; requisitions needed materials; plans work from
blueprints, drawings, and sketches; disassembles equipment and restores to
normal operating condition; checks and makes necessary tests for correct
refrigerant charge and operation of the equipment; disassembles units and
restores to operating condition; works on compressors, oil pumps,
condensers, expansion valves, solenoid valves, suction-discharge filters,
relays, switches, controls, and other parts related to the operation of
the air conditioning, chiller, refrigeration and heat pump units; performs
necessary welding and soldering of related fusing and makes necessary
piping repairs; coordinates work with other craftsmen when necessary;
prepares daily records of work performed and materials used; assists in
the ordering and stocking of work-related materials; performs needed
plumbing services; drives assigned vehicle to various locations.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Practices, methods, tools, and materials of air conditioning and
refrigeration trade;
State and local regulations pertaining to air conditioning and
refrigeration standards;
Safety practices and regulations pertaining to the air conditioning and
refrigeration trades.

Ability to:
Read and interpret blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications;
Make sketches and diagrams of air conditioning and refrigeration work and
assist in making accurate job estimates of materials and labor;
Work effectively with supervisors, school personnel and others;
Plan the layout, assembly installation, testing, and repair of air
conditioning and refrigeration systems;
Provide on-the-job training to other employees; e.g., engineers.

Skill/Training:
Is skilled and trained in the use of equipment, tools, and materials of
the air conditioning and refrigeration trade.
and
Experience:
Apprenticeship in this work of at least a five-year duration plus four
years experience as a journeyman air conditioning and refrigeration
plumber.
and
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade is desired, but not required.
and
Special Requirement:
Ability to do heavy work including the movement of objects up to 100
pounds and the frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to
50 pounds; must be able to ascend and descend ladders, stairs,
scaffolding, ramps, and the like, one or more stories above ground level;
must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl through attics, under
flooring, and similar spaces; must frequently work in inclement weather or
other adverse conditions including tight spaces, dusty areas, and other
unpleasant areas.
