DEFINITION
Under the direction of the principal, the autistic teacher will work with
students with exceptional needs, parents, paraprofessionals, and other
professional staff in providing for the educational, emotional, and
sensori-motor development of each student. The goal of this position
shall be to create a leaning environment for children with severe
language, emotional, and learning problems while assisting parents to work
with their children in maintaining a continuing therapeutic milieu.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: Possession of a basic teaching credential and a
credential authorizing service in at least one area of special education,
preferably in the area of communication as issued by the California
commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing.

Education: Baccalaureate or higher degree from an approved
institution. Priority consideration will be given to those who have
advance college training in the following areas: behavior
modification, operant conditioning, language development, language
training methodology, manual communication, parent training and
counseling, and emotional disturbances.

Experience: A minimum of one year of experience in working with
autistic children (or seriously emotionally disturbed children) in public
or private schools. Verified competency in the area of communicating
with parents and staff, behavior modification, language programs, and
manual communication.
TYPICAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides
individualized instructional programs emphasizing development of
cognitive, affective and sensori-motor skills for each student.

Conducts
inservice training for parents and provides for parent participation
in the classroom program.

Reviews
individual student profiles and established appropriate written
instructional plans to meet each student's needs, daily and long term.

Established
individual behavior modification for each student as needed and works
with the student's parents to provide consistency between school and
home.

Works
with the professional staff in providing auxiliary services for
individuals requiring special additional support.

Assumes
other appropriate responsibilities relative to the (autistic) severely
handicapped class as directed by the Administrative Specialist.
WORK
SCHEDULE AND SALARY
The
teacher of the severely handicapped class (autistic), will serve on all
days that schools are in session plus required non-teaching service days,
and will be placed on the teachers' salary schedule according to
experience and training no lower than Class III. Extra days of
service may be required and will be paid for at the employee's contract
daily rate.
