DEFINITION
The School Social Worker is a credentialed professional with specialized
knowledge of the effect of social, cultural, ethnic and emotional forces
in children which affect the learning process. One of the essential
means of achieving change in the child is the use of specialized,
professional social work skills.
The primary objective is the application of this specialized knowledge and
competency to prevent and ameliorate school related problems. The
School Social Worker provides services to children, teachers,
administrators, parents and community agencies through a variety of
special programs. The professional work of the School Social Worker
is under the direction of the Supervisor of Psychological and School
Social Work Services.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: Possession of a standard designated services credential
with specialization in pupil personnel services authorizing service as a
school social worker issued by the California Commission for Teacher
Preparation and Licensing, is required.

Education: A master's degree in social work from a school of social
work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education is required.

Experience: While no experience is required beyond the internship of
specified field experience required for the above credential, two years or
more full time supervised social work experience in schools, or a
recognized agency or clinic dealing with family or children's problems, is
preferred.
TYPICAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides
social work counseling, therapeutic and educational group work
services to families.

Provides
social work counseling or social group work services to pupils.

Provides
consultation services to school personnel.

Makes
appropriate referrals of families to public or private community
resources for assistance and works cooperatively with them.

Participates
in case conferences and works cooperatively with other pupil personnel
services staff members, school personnel, and community agencies.

Participates
as a resource person in school in-service training and program
planning.

Serves
as a source of information for school personnel concerning community
resources such as educational, recreational, protective, and
therapeutic services available for children and their families.

Serves
as liaison person between school, family, and community resources.

Maintains
appropriate case records and provides written reports as required.

Provides
consultation with and supervision of Pupil Service Workers.

Provides
psychosocial assessment and diagnosis of behavioral disabilities with
recommendation and/or environmental manipulation at the school, home
and/or community level with periodic reevaluation.
WORK
SCHEDULE AND SALARY
The
School Social Worker is assigned to work vacation schedule Group
"D," which requires five extra days of service during the summer
vacation.
