DEFINITION
Under direction, to plan, carry out and evaluate the hearing testing
program, and the health services and health education activities related
to this program, as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: Possession of a standard designated services credential
with a specialization in health or a credential of equivalent
authorization issued by the California Commission for Teacher Preparation
and Licensing; or a valid teaching credential with a specialization in
speech and hearing. Either must have six units in approved courses
in audiometry and possess an audiometrist's certificate issued by the
California State Department of Public Health.

Education: A baccalaureate or higher degree from an approved
institution is required.

Experience: A minimum of two years experience in some capacity as an
audiometrist, such as school nursing, public health department, speech and
hearing, handicapped program, military services, etc., will warrant
priority consideration.
TYPICAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In
conformance with the district's philosophy, goals and objectives
health services are to promote the educability of youth by providing a
consultive and health appraisal service to children, parents, and
school personnel. To accomplish these goals and objectives, the
school audiometrist:

Works
within the capabilities of the pupils in the schools assigned in
accomplishing health objectives.

Develops
goals and objectives in the hearing testing program and the health
services and health education activities which are consistent with
established district goals and objectives.

Works
cooperatively with principals and other district administrators and
supervisors in planning and implementing the hearing screening program
in the schools.

Maintains
a behavioral climate in the testing area on school premises that is
conducive to adequate hearing testing.

Conducts
hearing tests to evaluate status of the pupils' hearing in order to
establish a priority for action.

Interprets
to school personnel, parents, and students the results of screening
tests and examinations.

Arranges
for or personally contacts the parent regarding the health need of the
pupil and continues this contact if necessary until follow-up is
completed.

Assists
persons responsible for the pupil's health to locate appropriate
community resources.

Attends
Crippled Children's Services Otological Clinics as a part of follow-up
of referred pupils.

Communicates
with and serves as consultant to teachers, and other school personnel
regarding hearing related problems which might require special
consideration or arrangements for the student while in class.

Uses
available resources as a means of direct and indirect health
education.

Plans
and coordinates the work of paraprofessionals, parents, and volunteers
as assigned.

Offers
advisory assistance and/or leadership in planning, promoting, and
evaluating the health education program and to be available to
teachers as a resource person in appropriate phases of the health
education program.

Keeps
accurate records and makes available information appropriate for
inclusion in the cumulative records of the pupils. Executes and
prepares such forms, records and reports as may be called for in the
management of the hearing screening program at the school plant and
district level.

Exercises
supervision and care over furniture, books, supplies and equipment
entrusted to her care relating to the hearing screening program and
instructs pupils in the proper use and preservation of school
properties.

Attends
meetings called by order of the principal, program director or other
administrator authorized to call meetings.

Serves,
as requested, on school and district-wide committees and project
teams.

Attends
and participates in required inservice training activities and works
with the program director in planning her/his own inservice program.

Participates
in the coordination of the school health program with the total health
program of the school and the community.
-
Assists
in interpreting the programs and goals of the school district to the
community.
WORK
SCHEDULE AND SALARY
School
Audiometrists serve only on the days schools are in session plus required
non-teaching service days and professional meeting days. They are
placed on the teachers' salary schedule in terms of their training and
experience.
