DEFINITION
Under the direction of the GATE Specialist, the Resource Teacher, Gifted
and Talented Education (GATE), will work with students, parents, classroom
teachers, administrators, and other school site staff on behalf of the
GATE program K-12. The focus of this work will be in the areas of
referral, assessment, identification, inservice and curriculum development
for gifted students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: Possession of a basic teaching credential appropriate to
the assigned segment or credentials or equivalent authorization, issued by
the California Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing, is
required.

Education: A bachelor's degree from an approved institution and
demonstrated competency relative to classroom instruction, knowledge of
special needs of gifted students and curriculum development.

Experience: Priority consideration shall be given to candidates who
have undertaken advanced training or indicate a willingness to undertake
such training.
TYPICAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Works
with GATE staff to develop and implement inservice programs in the
areas of referral, identification and curriculum.

Assists
site staff in the student referral process.

Assists
site staff in the development of core curriculum extensions for
classroom use, and assists teachers in the acquisition of materials,
outside services and other curriculum supplements.

Works
with teachers and other staff members to foster an understanding of
gifted and talented students of all cultural backgrounds, and to
assist them in recognizing and addressing the students' educational
needs.

Conducts
student observations, interviews, assessments and evaluations as part
of the student referral, identification and placement process.

Participates
as a member of the GATE Referral Committee and as a member of the GATE
District Advisory Committee.

Assists
in the student placement process K-12.

Assists
in the recruitment of students for the GATE program and of parents as
program support groups.

Provides
parent education within multicultural communities to inform parents
about the GATE program, and assist parents in the referral and/or
placement process.

Develops
goals, time lines and maintains a recordkeeping system for work
performance.

Works
as a team member to develop newsletters, brochures, information
packets and promotional events for the GATE program.

Communicates
with teachers, administrators, parents and students on a variety of
subjects related to gifted education in different settings.

Assists
in interpreting GATE program goals and service options to the
community.

Attends
and participates in required meetings and inservice training
activities.

Performs
other duties relative to the GATE program within the parameters of the
Sacramento Agreement.
WORK
SCHEDULE AND SALARY
A
Resource Teacher, Gifted and Talented Education, serves on the days
schools are in session plus required non-teaching service days, and is
placed on the teachers' salary schedule according to his/her training and
experience.
